waiting rooms
. Forbes is published 26 times per year (every 2
weeks).

This posting is a letter we received from an aspiring writer who wanted to write an article about magazine services online.

Magazine subscriptions from MagMall makes a lot of sense because it is one of the original places to go for online magazine subscriptions. They have a great discount! They have a wide variety of magazines to choose from, ranging from fashion to science to health to computers and Internet. They are all reduced significantly from the newsstand rate! You can usually get a whole year for less than the price of 4 or 5 issues!

If you are a businessperson, why not pick up the latest issue of a business magazine? There are many to choose from, from computers to stocks to business investments. They even have magazines that are specific to your business interest. Wouldn’t it be great to have all these wonderful tips to help you come right to your home? Or how about to your office, so you can share with your co-workers? Each co-worker can get one magazine, and then your entire office can share together. Your boss would likely be very impressed with your extra knowledge, as well as how great you are working with your co-workers. If you organized it, it would really show your initiative.

How about if you are a doctor, or work in a doctor’s office? Wouldn’t your patients be happier in your waiting room if they were able to read something they enjoyed, instead of having them just sit there with only 1 or 2 magazine choices? That would help their wait go faster, and in turn will be more willing to come back. So, why not get a wide variety of different magazines, since your customers all have different tastes. That way everyone can be happy. Doctors and workers can even get something for themselves, so that they can enjoy something on your break?

Students what about you? Wouldn’t you like to read something else besides a textbook once in a while? Since magazines are published every month, you can get up-to-date information on your chosen area of study. Magazines can also have more interesting sections, as well as sections that can show how your field of study can be applicable in the real world. You can even read letter and articles from people who are knowledgeable in your field. Or, you can just get a magazine or two to just relax with after a big test. The best part is that they have student magazine subscriptions, special magazine discounts that you have to be a student to qualify for!

smartmoney cover image

As I started to talk about last night in a recent article in Smartmoney magazine, you can really learn a lot about aggresive investment strategies that are outside the norm. Like Forbes magazine that I’ve been covering you can find some really interesting earning opportunities. This posting is going to talk about pest control. This explosive industry really heats up in the summertime and if you are like me and you just want to sit back and enjoy a good title from your collection of magazine subscriptions, it is tough to do if you are getting eaten up by pesky insects.

First of all you need to contend with bedbugs. You thought they were gone but actually according to the National Pest Management Association the bloodsuckers are back. Nationwide complaints rose 71% from 2000 to 2005. In New York City, bedbug complaints from renters more than doubled in fiscal 2006. Bedbugs really suck for homeowners and they can challenge your mental health. They’re extremely difficult to get rid of.

The next pest that comes out big time during the summer are termites. Now here you have to be really careful to look at your contract with your pest control company. If you discover that termites seriously damage your house you need to check if you have a lifetime guarantee to see if the contract covers repairs. You could get messed up though if damage is so extensive that the house needs to be bulldozed. You also need to see if you can sue or if you are required to go to binding arbitration. Termites cost almost $5 billion in property loss each year, so being aware of your legal rights before signing with a pest-control firm is key. When cases do go to court the damages can be huge.

I certainly spent enough time warming up to the fire with comments from Forbes magazine and there for sure will be more to come but the next stop on the magazine subscription train is with Smartmoney magazine from the owners of the Wall Street Journal. here you get some really insightful ideas on not just routine investment strategies but more off the beaten path ideas like discovering new trends or even highlighting old school ideas that people are too busy to see under their noses.

Today’s posting uncovers one such hidden gem. Pest control. We run a web site design company over at www.ladezign.com and one of our first promotional ideas was to design pest control sites for companies around the U.S. who most likely have pretty shoddy sites. What will knock your socks off though is the idea that pest control has grown into a $6.7 billion industry, up 28% since 2000 (According to the National Pest Management Association).

It’s a great time to be in the pest-control business. Tighter restrictions on pesticides, changing weather patterns and the emergence of treatment-resistant insects and regional epidemics have converged, creating a perfect storm for exterminators in many parts of the country. Because of the claims of global warming accompanied by recent temperature increases, pests seem to be thriving in larger geographical areas. Travelers can bring new kinds of pests into the country, while population shifts have trended toward the Sunbelt states and other areas where insects thrive. The number of pest-control firms is now over 19,000, up more than 7% since 2000, and is expected to continue to rise.

I’ll cover some more investment ideas related to the pest control arena in future postings. You are invited to visit the Smartmoney web site to see the fuller coverage of this rather explosive industry. If you can’t find Smartmoney in a local newsstand or even in a waiting room or reception area of your local investment adviser then take a stroll to your favorite public library and look at a sample issue before subscribing. Then come to an online magazine subscription agency like ours to enjoy a cheaper discount price on a year long subscription. Smartmoney magazine like Forbes magazine is a great gift subscription item to give away to a friend of family member - especially since we include a free gift card with your purchase.

Running a magazine subscriptions business is no easy job as an entrepreneur. It reminds though of the days when i used to be employed by a big national company and then I used to worry about job security. These days, jobs that offer total employment security are few and far between. The world has changed and the notion of permanent employment enjoyed by civil servants and what used to be a taken for granted notion in Japan that you can’t be fired is no longer the same. No job is completely bulletproof. Yet there are some that come close.

Forbes magazine comes to the rescue again with some more information today on job security. As they reported today, there is nothing more steady and secure than becoming a federal judge. of course, it takes a long time to get appointed and it is as likely as becoming CEO of a multi-national company, but once candidates get approved by Congress, they receive lifetime appointments. That is the kind of security you can’t buy.

i’m not even sure why this matters but it is pretty crazy that out of thousands of federal judges, only 7 have ever been convicted and removed from office - for things like perjury to tax evasion to mental illness. If you are wondering what is an impeachable offense (the one that gets you removed), then look to former President Gerald R. Ford who said basically, it is anything the Congress says is an impeachable offense.

So, if being nominated by the Congress seems too far afield, then you might want to become a tenured educator. It doesn’t mean having a job for life and it means that there must be “just cause” for removing the employee. The educator receives due process, similar to what American citizens expect when charged with violation of a law, according to the National Educators Association. They have the right to a fair hearing, and administrators have to prove their case.

Moving further down the job protection ladder comes a union job. Unionized employees can have similar protections. While contracts differ from union to union, one thing remains the same. “Before companies can do a significant lay-off, they’re obligated to discuss and bargain with the union and seek alternatives,” says Tom Conway, vice president of the United Steel Workers Union. In the Steel Workers Union, when a company says they’re bringing employees in to work eight-hour days, five days per week, they’re required to pay the staff even if they don’t have enough work to give them. If a shortage of work becomes extreme, they can use the supplemental unemployment benefit that pays employees about 80% of their wages.

I’m not a big fan of unions but they do serve their purpose in certain cases. All I can say right now is that at MagMall we have low turnover and we are not unionized. I just wrote these thoughts down a bit because it is interesting to see how individuals deal with these types of issues. It is probably why Forbes is such a popular magazines among our subscribers through our discount magazine subscription service. It isn’t that they just save money and get coupons towards discount subscriptions it is that they learn a lot. this explains why most corporate customers and library subscribers renew Forbes Magazine year after year.

If you did not get a chance to review the article on long term care insurance I referenced from the Forbes magazine web site I’ve decided to cover it in more detail here. If I get a chance I may do some more research in other business magazines like Business Week and Smartmoney to see what they have to say about this type of protective planning.

Long term health care (LTC) insurance ensures that you will have money for care, thereby protecting your assets from being consumed by your health care needs. An LTC policy gives you the type of retirement plan that assures you of an income as long as you need it. Financial advisers nationwide will tell you that health care costs are the top threat to your retirement security. As I write this blog I ask myself as does Forbes writers, “why don’t more Americans buy LTC coverage”? Even moreso, why don’t more financial advisers (who understand the planning benefits), sell these LTC policies?

There are many reasons it seems why they don’t purchase the insurance. Consumers think that spending at least $1,000 a year when they are in their fifties and feeling good is too expensive. Plus, financial advisers don’t actually sell coverage so they have to refer you to someone else like dedicated LTC specialists. At the end of the day, the simple answer is people don’t like to think about death, let alone plan for the long term care that precedes it.

I don’t want to belabor the point anymore. Long term health care insurance is something to consider and if I had not been a consistent fan of Forbes I would not have started to consider this as a new priority as I enter my forties. If you want to expand your horizons and order a subscription to this types of informative magazine consider subscribing through our discount magazine subscription service. We often have promotional coupons and discounts to save you quite a bit of money on a new, renewal or gift subscription.

The magazine House Beautiful could never be said to be down-to-earth, but sometimes “heavenly” is a better accolade. When it comes to feeding our nesting urge with larger than life possibilities, and awakening our imaginations with new trends, classic old ideas, and more, House Beautiful fits the bill.  As in most home and garden magazines, the photography is fresh and elegant. Often even the advertisements contain great or just plain amusing decorating ideas, such as the star-and-moon painted staircase advertising Sherwin-Williams paints in past issue. Columns full of vibrant ideas and valuable information include “Style Beat,” “News,” which illustrated and discussed some contemporary Native American art that I’ll try to see, and “Scrapbook,” which featured clever ideas using paint (also in the same issue).

A Thoughts of Home” in a later issue tells of a woman’s need to move away from a historic, registered house because of divorce, and another talks of abandoned houses and their pull on the imagination. Every single one is a tribute to the editor of this feature, and never are emotions overwrought or cheap. Each story is honest, with true-life situations, and all beautifully written.

The July 2007 issue featured nine idea-filled kitchens, and an article on how to decorate using color with confidence, both of which I found helpful. My rooms may never look as elegant as House Beautiful’s, but they do an excellent job of showcasing fine traditional or avant-garde design and decorating ideas. You may not have their budget, but they’re not so far out of touch they you can’t emulate their ideas. For example, although I don’t have their wonderful assortment of picnic baskets to arrange as they did them in the Kitchen issue, their picture gave me an idea for arranging my own extensive basket collection in a simpler, homey way.

And it looks excellent, now, stacked with separators on a corner of their kitchen instead of piled here and there with no rhyme or reason.  House Beautiful seems to have recognized the cozier, homier look most Americans prefer, and are often including an almost country look in an occasional review. If you are trying to locate a current copy in a local public or school library, you may not have much difficulty. It is a common magazine in waiting rooms and reception areas because it is so univerally loved. We have no problem subscriptions through our magazine subscription service - whether it is for a new, renewal or even gift subscription - and it is no surprise. that’s all. Maybe it’s because we offer cheap discount prices or maybe it is just what it is.

In the new issue of Better Homes and Gardens, there is a really great article on how to decorate your home in a simplified matter.  I’m just really happy that my subscription started right when I was about to start redecorating my twenty-year old home!  One of the pointers that I was given in the newest issue (which, by the way, is also and always available online), is to decorate using white (which is a great way to avoid color decisions!).

We tried this in both of my children’s bedrooms and in the master bedroom and we are all happy as pie with the results.  I have never seen my wife happier with my antics thanks to my omniscient decision!

The newest issue of Better Homes and Gardens also advised my family that the color blue is one of the best bets to combine with white and that is exactly what we decided to do once we had the painters start questioning us as to what color plan is the best for the living room.  The inside porch that was just completed also has its own unique color and design.  We decided to go with more of an “autumn” outlook with the porch and, once it was completed, it gave me a sense of déjà vu – almost as if I had dreamt about the completion of it before it was finished.

The extra guest bedroom that we had installed on the third floor has leaf-print wallpaper throughout.  Even the bed sheets and bed cover have the same pattern and colors.  The dining room on the first floor was done exclusively in brown, silver and crystal.  I can’t wait for my younger brother and his family to visit so that they can check out how beautiful it turned out.  He was definitely one of the persons that influenced me in finishing up our house and for that I am honored!

As always, if you work for a company or a business and you want a magazine subscription service to consolidate all your subscriptions, give us a shout. we have a nice, clean online interface to manage all your new, renewal and gift subscriptions. it is a lot of fun writing these postings on home magazines because we get to cover related titles like Fine Homebuilding, yet another house improvement classic.

Ciao!
