Hypertrophic Scars Treatment: Cosmetic and Natural Options

by Martha Fitzharris

The number of skin treatments available today can be overwhelming. Don't let the options overwhelm you, learn about them and start removing yours scars. If you want to reduce the visibility of your scars, take a look into the below opportunities.

Cosmetic Scar Treatments

Dermabrasion describes the method of freezing the skin and then exfoliating the skin away with a rotary instrument. This quick removal of skin signals the body to replace it with new and healthy skin cells. Dermabrasion was first developed to specifically attack acne scars, pock marks and scars.

Pros: One treatment works to regenerate new skin and soften the sharpness of scars.

Cons: This procedure requires either local or general anesthesia. Although healing can be completed within 7-10 days, pinkness associated with skin irritation can last 6-8 weeks. Burn scars are not treated with dermabrasion.

Microdermabrasion combines abrasion (usually from special crystals) and suction of skin to lift off the outer most layer of skin. Like dermabrasion, the skin removal causes the body to generate new skin cells.

Pros: The procedure is quick and requires little recovery time. It is less invasive than dermabrasion.

Cons: For best results, you should complete 4-8 initial treatments with breaks of 1-2 weeks. Results are not permanent.

Steroid Injections are used in the treatment of keloid and hypertrophic scars, the steroid mixes with the scar tissue, minimizing inflammation and collagen growth. An excess of collagen forms keloid and hypertrophic scars, as well as causes itching and flaking.

Pros: Works well with keloid and hypertrophic scar removal.

Cons: Use in excess can lead to thin and weak skin. This type of injection does not work for atrophic scars. Collagen injections for atrophic scars have short-term results.

Laser Treatment is available for the different types of scars. Generally, during the session, a surgeon moves the laser along the scar tissue, removing a layer of skin that covers the protruding scar tissue and exposing new skin. It is an effective hypertrophic acne scar treatment. When treating atrophic scars, the lasers used stimulate the production of collagen.

Pros: Laser treatment has proven successful for atrophic and hypertrophic scars. It also can be combined with chemical peel or other procedures, so costs for anesthesia and facility can be combined.

Cons: Hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation are common side effects. Also, those with psoriasis, cystic acne and dermatitis, among others, should avoid laser treatment.

Scar Revision refers to a set of surgical techniques that are conducted to enhance the appearance of scar tissue, blending it in with surrounding skin. Hypertrophic treatment scar revision surgery involves the removal of scar tissue and a cut that heals with less of a scar.

Pros: Scar revision can be used on scars anywhere over the body. Popular for areas of the body that are difficult to hide. Results are permanent.

Cons: It typically requires that the patient be under general anesthesia for a 1-3 hour long procedure.

Over the Counter Scar Treatments

Onion Extract when applied to scar tissue helps reduce appearance of scars by acting as an anti-inflammatory and by inhibiting the production of collagen. Regular use over a period of several months is required to achieve desired effects.

Silicone, available as a gel or in sheets, removes extra scar tissue and lightens darkened scars. It is not fully know why this works as a scar treatment.

The secretion of the Helix Aspersa Muller, Mucin, produces similar results to those of the medical procedures. This secretion has natural anti-inflammatory and exfoliating properties, together stimulating the new production of healthy skin. This product is becoming a new trend in the beauty market.

BIOSKINREPAIR is a natural scar treatment that contains the powerful anti-inflammatory and skin-rejuvenating properties found in mucin, the secretion produced by the Helix Aspersa Muller.
