There are a group of hereditray diseases called Keratosis Palmaris also known as Palmoplantar keratoderma. These diseases cause a thickening of the skin on the palms and soles of your feet. This thickening is because of an overproduction of keratin protein that leads to the extreme growth of the stratum corneum (hyperkeratosis).

Types of Palmoplantar Keratoderma

This group of skin diseases is divided into categories and types. There are three hereditary variations that are marked by distinct patterns of epidermal development. The three types are diffuse PPK, focal PPK, and punctate keratoderma.

Diffuse Palmoplantar Keratoderma

This type of PPK is the consistent yellow thickening of the surface skin of the palms or soles. This disorder can start as early as the first few months of life.

Focal Palmoplantar Keratoderma

This type of PPK is the localized thickening of skin in particular areas of the palms or soles. This disorder usually starts in the first two years of life. The areas that suffer this thickening are those that experience the most pressure and friction.

Punctate Keratoderma

This type is caused by concentrated hyperkeratosis which leads to small bumps or nodules. These nodules may appear on the entire surface of the skin, or maybe just in certain areas. The onset of this disorder is anywhere between the ages of 10 and 70.

What treatments help with keratosis palmaris diseases? Treatments are few and wide, but most consist of a regular application of moisturizer on the affected area. It is also helpful to avoid harsh soaps and cleansers. Some people find that the best keratosis palmaris treatment is a mixture of a few.
