A Straight Answer to the Question: What is Microdermabrasion?

by Gabrielle Rygh

How does this popular procedure work? Well, there is no need to look any further for answers because you'll find them all right here.

Do not confuse microdermabrasion with other procedures

Microdermabrasion is a relatively new medical term. People who are interested in chemical peels or laser resurfacing often are not aware of the advantages of microdermabrasion. These misunderstandings lead to apprehension in the use of this procedure.

While all three procedures rejuvenate the skin without major surgery they are all distinct procedures. Laser resurfacing uses a light amplified beam to remove skin tissues which removes scar and blemishes. Chemical peels use acids like alphahydroxy acid, trichloroacetic acid and phenol to remove outer layers of skin for the same reasons.

Then what is microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion, however, is a treatment that consists of having the outermost layer of dead skin gently sanded away. A minute hand held device containing tiny exfoliation particles is passed over the skin's surface. In an action very similar to sandblasting these particles are painted across the area of concern. The same device then sucks away the dead skin cells along with the used exfoliation materials.

Unlike other skin resurfacing treatments microdermabrasion is a procedure that can be done in an office or salon setting as well as at home with over the counter products and specially designed machines. Many people choose to utilize a specially formulated home microdermabrasion cream. This procedure works well on the face, neck, chest and hands or any other skin surface. Depending on the extent of the treatment the sessions may last up to an hour.

Benefits of resurfacing treatments:

Microdermabrasion seems to have a favorable effect on all three layers of the skin. The outer layer (epidermis) is benefited by removing the old cells and exposing the new ones. The second layer of skin (dermis) enjoys heightened collagen production and more elasticity. The final layer of skin (subcutaneous) experiences a significant increase in blood flow making the skin healthier overall.

The multiple uses of microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is utilized to:

* Clear aging skin * Remove scars from acne * Improve fine lines and wrinkles * Lighten unwanted pigmentation * Smooth uneven textures * Control oily skin

A related question is: what are some of the specific options and products that exist for home microdermabrasion? And what are the properties of the creams that are used in this process?

Microdermabrasion remains a popular choice for resolving skin care issues because it is a simple procedure that can be done even in the privacy of your own home using microdermabrasion kits along with microdermabrasion creams. Certain microdermabrasion creams, such as BIOSKINEXFOL, contain the extract of the helix aspera muller snail. This extract is just one of various organic skin regenerators- such as jojoba oil or wheat germ oil- that are available on the market for your specific skin care needs.
