Cat Training Demystified

by Kathrynn Kelley

You've made the leap and decided to get a pet. The cutest little kitten in the world looked at you with its big soulful eyes and you bought it on the spot. But how do you train it? Cat training isn't as hard as most people think, and cats have a quick learning curve. Cats are low-maintenance, and once you've finished your kitten training you'll be so happy with your choice to own one.

When setting up a litter box, the first thing you must do is choose a central location. Cats like privacy in their litter box, so the location should be somewhat private, but also easy to access. You must be sure that it is not easily accessible by children, and if you are pregnant, you will have to get somebody else to clean it for you because of the risk of toxoplasmosis.

Once your litter box is set up and filled with sand, you can begin cat training. Simply show your kitten where the litter box is, place him inside the litter box for a few minutes, and let him sniff and scratch. Cats naturally gravitate towards sand and sand-like substances to use the bathroom, so once he smells the sand and feels the texture, he will instinctively know what to do. Give him a few minutes. He may not need to use the bathroom right away.

For most kittens, litter box training can require a few missed attempts. To clean cat urine, consider mixing a paste of white vinegar, baking soda, peroxide and dishwashing gel. Apply the gel to the urine spot after sopping up as much of the urine as you can with a cloth or paper towel. Vacuum the mix after allowing it to stand for an hour. The odor and stain should be eliminated, and the cat is unlikely to urinate in the same spot again.

Cat training could be very difficult, if you don't keep their litter box clean. Cats are very clean animals, and if the litter box they are using is dirty, they may eliminate waste in an inappropriate place because of this. During your cat training process, if you notice the litter box is dirty, clean it out as soon as possible. Show the cat the litter box, in order to restart your cat training process again, and this will help your cat begin using the litter box again.

People who own cats often get a lot of satisfaction from their pets. Cats are smart and exhibit naturally curious behavior. They are easy to train and learn quickly. They will probably adapt easily to your home routine and will give you many happy years together.

So you have decided to take a big step, you have become a pet owner. Fortunately for you, cat training is not a difficult thing to accomplish, and can be achieved quite quickly. Cats are fairly low maintenance, and once you have completed your kitten training you will be ecstatic with the decision you have made to take on the responsibility. Sometimes it may take kittens a few tries to get the gist of using a litter box. If this happens, you can clean cat urine by mixing a paste of baking soda, white vinegar, dish washing gel, and peroxide.
