by Tommy Thompson

Oriental rugs were being woven as early as 5th century B.C. The earliest were woven in Asia and Europe. The weavers who wove them were highly talented. Persian rugs are a highly coveted home accessory that is priceless and beautiful. The elegance and style of these rugs is what makes them popular. There is a special technique that goes in to weaving a Persian rug by hand.

Most Persian rugs have been produced over the years in what is now Iran, which was previously known as Persia. Materials that are used in these exquisitely crafted hand made carpets are wool, cotton, and silk. There have been quite a few centers of production of these Persian rugs in Iran over the years. These centers are Tabriz, Kashan, Kerman, and Herat.

The blue and red symmetrical pattern of the design that rests atop an ivory background is what sets Tabitz rugs apart. Woven carpets that come from a mythical historical era have pictorial designs. These carpets are judged based on the measurement of knots per square inch. This varies from 75 knots per square inch to 110 knots. These carpets are made from either silk or cotton, with the silk being more expensive and more of a treasure.

Kashan is known for its beautiful silk carpets. They have a single medallion in the middle and floral motifs, wines, flower stems and leafs woven as patterns. Some of these carpets have designs of animals woven into them. Kashan carpets are some of the most expensive in the world. Old Kashan carpets are of very good quality. They generally come in sizes of 4x 6 and 8x 6.

The floral patterns and complex wines that are woven into Herat rugs set them apart from others. The enchanting color schemes in the Persian carpets are hand woven with a single knot technique. The drifting tribes in Iran weave the unique Baluch rugs. For the past 2500 years the deep colors of navy blue, ivory and red have been used to weave life into these luxurious rugs.

Shiraz rugs are made in Shiraz in central Iran and hare hand knotted and have geometric designs, animals or plants as designs. Red is the predominant color of these carpets. Wiss rugs are woven by tribes in the village of Wiss in Iran. Floral designs, wines, foliage and elements of garden are their primary designs.

The art of making Oriental rugs is an ancient tradition, going all the way back to the 5th century B.C. These rugs were orginally made in Asia and Egypt.
