Dog Food: Finding The Best For Your Pet.

by Melinda Smith

If you have a dog, then you probably spend a lot of time wondering what is best for them. Dog food is just one area where you have to make a decision on the best option for your dog, and where your choice will affect every part of his life. To this end, it is important that you make the very best decision for your dog.

Of the numerous varieties of dog food available in the market, most consumers are still not tuned to the message that the food manufacturers want to convey and leaving them confused. This aspect is true not only for this but for most of the mass marketed grocery store foods. This is probably the major segment of dog food on the market.

A lot of the dog foods you find in your supermarket contain ingredients that are not very nutritional for your dog. They are mainly made up of a lot of fillers that do nothing for dog health. Many of them are also loaded with chemicals and preservatives that might actually be harmful to your dog. Recently there have been recalls of some of these products because the chemicals could actually prove fatal to your dog.

Two main types of dog food are on the market. Premium foods can be purchased at pet stores. They are also sometimes available in grocery stores, but they are more expensive than regular pet foods. The quality of these foods varies. It can sometimes be very good and it can also be bad. Look at the ingredient label. If you see something which you don't recognize, check online and determine what it is. Don't just feed anything to your dog.

The final classification of dog food is natural or organic food. They are generally quite a bit costlier than grocery store foods and can only be purchased in a specialty store (physical or online). Brands like Honest Kitchen fall into this category. They cost more because you get what you pay for. Organic and natural foods contain better ingredients that are healthier for your dog.

Organic and natural food contain human grade ingredients that have been modified for dogs. These foods not only satisfy a dog's appetite, they are nutritionally balanced to provide healthy and shiny coats. Keep in mind the health advantages before you decide to feed your dog a cheaper alternative.
