How Important Is Pet Insurance?

by Melinda Smith

Although there are a large number of pet owners in the States, a majority fail to see a reason to have pet insurance; to date this peculiarity remains somewhat of an enigma. The average US citizen would not neglect their own health insurance cover, so should we be forgiven for not caring enough about our pets then?

Perhaps it sounds like another unnecessary expense to you, but imagine being hit with a four figure bill if your pet gets unexpectedly sick or injured! With everything around us increasing in cost, it is not surprising that vet fees have also risen as well; this has lead to an increase in pet insurance premiums. What this means is pet insurance companies have been forced to pass on this additional cost.

The rising cost of pet health insurance cover is one matter to bear in mind but are there any others? Unfortunately, domestic animals develop illnesses occasionally or are involved in an accident; when this happens, the cost of treatment may even cause financial strain.

This situation happened to someone I know a couple of years back when he was looking at spending one thousand dollars to save his dog. Even though the dog was a treasured part of this friend's family, he commented to me at the time that he was not sure whether the cost was worth it. I was appalled, but when people don't have access to cash for emergencies, this is the position some people find themselves in. Medical science cannot cure everything and pets are vulnerable too, and the reality is that animals do not always survive after a course of treatment or an operation.

If you are in this unenviable situation then a choice may have to be made; and you should never have to think about how much your pet's is going to cost.

The financial strain of keeping your pet healthy can be overwhelming. This is even more apposite if you start to experience financial difficulties. You may have other pressing financial commitments to attend to so raising further capital can sometimes be a problem.

When the cost of your pet's veterinary treatment is uppermost in your thoughts, this can cloud your judgment; but this is completely avoided if you have taken out a pet care insurance policy because you will not need to worry how much the treatment will cost. Pet health insurance can usually be purchased relatively inexpensively despite recent rises; these plans can be purchased from anywhere between twenty to forty dollars a month or even as low as a hundred dollars a year which could save a small fortune in the long term.

HealthierDogs.com has a large quantity of pet insurance and general pet health info. Take a look if you're at all interested in gathering more information in relation to pet care insurance and other pet health topics.
